I\u2019m really excited to catch up with lots of relatives and friends, some of whom I haven\u2019t seen in years. And it\u2019ll be a chance for the boys to hear nothing but English for a few days. But now that I think about it, they won\u2019t hear very much \u201cstandard\u201d English.<\/p>\n<p>The wedding will be held in the west of Scotland, where people have a much broader accent than my own lowland lilt. The groom hails from Wolverhampton down near Birmingham, England. Coincidentally, his brother also has a German wife and two boys, but they have been living in Colorado for years. I have a cousin flying in from New Zealand, and since my sister has herself lived in France, Italy and Japan, there are bound to be even more linguistic surprises.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll report on the international highlights when I get back, but for now, I\u2019d like to share some of the very Scottish things we may get to hear:<\/p>\n<p>Since my kids have had the good fortune of inheriting my wife\u2019s healthy complexion and not my pasty one, someone might say to them \u201cat least you\u2019re no\u2019 peely-wally like fayther\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Scottish weddings are rarely sober affairs, but I hope nobody gets too \u201csteamin\u2019\u201d (steaming = very drunk). Indeed, someone behaving badly may be called a \u201cbampot\u201d (crazy person), be told to \u201chaud yer wheesht\u201d (shut up) or even receive a \u201cskelp roon\u2019 the lug\u201d (a clip round the ear).<\/p>\n<p>During the ceremony, my mother will be so happy that she will be \u201cgreetin\u2019\u201d (crying) and at the end of the day, she is bound to be heard saying \u201cOch, Ah\u2019m fair wabbit and ma dogs are barkin\u2019!\u201d (I\u2019m rather tired and my feet hurt.)<\/p>\n<p>At any rate, I\u2019m sure the wedding will be a stoater (fantastic affair).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019m about to set off for Scotland to attend my sister\u2019s wedding.
